Last summer, I got married to an amazing man (yay!). While we were planning our new life together, we knew that I didn’t want to go out and get a s&b job, but that it would be awesome if I could make a couple hundred a month, just for discretionary spending. I had a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and had experience building a website for our farm. I knew I loved website and graphic design, but I just didn’t know what I could do with it. At the time, I had no idea what a Virtual Assistant was.
I have an entrepreneurial spirit so I knew there was SOMETHING I could do. And I was going to make it happen. I had been writing for a fellow blogger for a few months so, on a whim, I reached out and told her if she ever needed any help with anything else to let me know. She took a chance on me. She hired me for some introductory work and introduced me to several awesome VA groups on Facebook where, get this, people were SELLING CONTENT AND SERVICES. I had no idea that was a thing! People will PAY to have someone run their Pinterest account? Say what?!
So, I took a chance. I posted that I had a couple of spots open for social media management and I immediately got bites. (probably because my rates were so low….I have since learned..lol!)
The week we left for our honeymoon, I had a job making $500/month. I was so excited! I poured my heart into helping my client and she returned the favor by recommending me to other people!
Over the next few months, I started getting clients pouring in. Sure, I posted some services (like exclusive social media graphics), but the majority of the clients were coming from word of mouth.
I could feel myself getting famous!
Okay, maybe not famous, but the workflow was steady and within 2 months, I was making over 3k/month. I was doing all sorts of things: social media management was my number one service. Eventually, my hands were full. I had to hire help and raise my rates to be more competitive. (by the way, the higher the rates, the more people will take you seriously because that shows you have a quality product/service!)
To this day, I get 2-3 new client referrals a week from word of mouth. Not all of those are a good match, but having referrals constantly poor in is amazing.
I hardly do any advertising (I will still do some for small graphics jobs and scheduling jobs).
In February, I made $5,000 (before expenses).
So, what am I doing? How did I get here?
Well, first of all, I have been enormously blessed. There’s no way I can take all the credit for this. God has had his hand on my business!
Am I charging outrageous prices? NO. I charge $200/month for management of a social profile (Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Etc) and I charge as low as $4 per social media graphic! (I have seen prices in the upwards of $500-$1000/month for social media management)
Do I have my hands full? Yes. But, I recently hired help and that allows me to really focus and drive my business forward.
Do I love it? Yes. It’s a job unlike any other- I mean, I can work in my PJ’s! Now, there are some tasks that I don’t particularly like. But, you have to make a few sacrifices. The thing is, I choose to do those tasks. I don’t have to. And you can choose what you want to do/sell!
What services am I offering? This is a question I get asked a lot. Here’s the thing- I do anything. Really- I can design a brand new website, place ads, set up email campaigns, schedule your social media or design graphics. If there’s ever something I don’t feel I can adequately do, I’ll let the client know. (honesty is key!)
My most popular services are social media management, graphic design, administrative tasks and web design.
With honesty, great communication skills and quick turnarounds, I have become a VA that people want to recommend.
I don’t share these numbers to rub it in your face.
I share it because a year ago, I had NO idea what a Virtual Assistant was. I had no idea how I was going to make money from home, but I knew there had to be some way. I was able to take those most precious months of our newlywed life and not have to worry about going to work. I could turn off my computer whenever I wanted and walk away for the day. I want you to be able to do the same thing.
It’s because of this job that my husband and I are able to start travelling full-time starting this summer (I mean, how many newlyweds get to do that!)
Having a remote job that I can do wherever I have internet has opened so many doors in our life, and created a sense of freedom like no other.
So, I encourage you. If you are struggling today trying to figure out how to make some extra money, this is one way you may be able to do it. It’s a whole lot of work, but if you have the patience and are good at it, it can really make a difference in your life!
If you have any questions at all about becoming a VA, please let me know so I can try to help you!
